About Global Fisheries Atlas

The Virtual Lab “Global Fisheries Atlas” mission is to provide a more comprehensive view of global fisheries to support informed decision-making and management of fisheries resources. Our Vlab is designed to comply with best practices for data and knowledge management and to be user-friendly and accessible to anyone interested in learning more about the state of global fisheries. The main pillars of the VLab are (a) the Fisheries Atlas and (b) the Global Record of Stocks and Fisheries.

  • Fisheries Atlas is a standardized spatial data infrastructure storing and disseminating fisheries data by complying with OGC standards for spatial data and by assigning DOIs (on Zenodo). The main demonstrator is the Global Tuna Atlas driven in close partnership with FIRMS (FAO and tuna RFMOs).

  • The Global Record of Stocks and Fisheries (GRSF) provides the knowledge base of stocks and fisheries inventoried at a global level, with standard unique identifiers. It enables a harmonized view of stocks and fisheries from 4 different data sources, namely, FIRMS (FAO), FishSource (Sustainable Fisheries Partnership), RAM (RAM Legacy Stock Assessment), and FAO SDG14.4.1 Questionnaire.

Services:

On our platform, you'll find a wealth of data and information about global fisheries, including catch data, stock assessments, and management measures. The data is sourced from a variety of reputable organizations and institutions and is updated on a regular basis to ensure that it is as current and accurate as possible.

In addition to these data and information resources, we also provide a suite of tools and services to help users analyze and interpret this content. These tools include interactive maps and charts, as well as advanced data analysis and modeling capabilities.

At the VLab Global Fisheries Atlas, we believe informed decision-making is the key to sustainable fisheries management. By providing access to reliable, up-to-date data and analysis tools, we hope to empower stakeholders at all levels to make informed decisions about managing valuable fisheries resources.

In more detail, access to the following services is provided through the VLab:

  • Resources catalog, enabling the retrieval, grouping, and visualization of datasets and records (i.e. fisheries records).

  • Triplestore, enabling access over the contents of semantic web knowledge bases (i.e. GRSF knowledge base) using W3C standards (i.e. through a SPARQL endpoint)

  • MapViewer, supporting the visualization of information on a map using multiple layers
